DYLAN / SPEED WALKER

A simple thing.
A big part of who I am.

I started Speed Walker to share something I enjoy and get more people talking about it. This is my place for the videos, the challenges, and what I learn along the way.

I call it speed walking. You'll also know it as race walking. Whatever you call it, there's more to this sport than most people think.

THE SPORT, IN A FEW STEPS

SPEED WALKING.
RACE WALKING.
MY KIND OF SPORT.

I prefer the name speed walking. Race walking is the official competitive name, with two technique rules that make it its own discipline.

01

Stay connected.

There must be no loss of contact with the ground visible to the human eye.

02

Keep the advancing leg straight.

From first contact with the ground until it passes beneath the body in the vertical position.

An Olympic starting line.

Standalone walking events enter the modern Olympic programme in London: 3,500 metres and 10 miles. George Larner wins both.

Curious enough to give it a try? Start with the basics, find a comfortable rhythm, and make it your own.

PICK YOUR STARTING POINT

You don't need a huge step count.
You need a pace you can build on.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

Make smooth your first goal.

  1. 01

    Stand tall.

Head up, shoulders relaxed. Keep your body facing the direction you're moving.

  2. 02

    Find a quick rhythm.

Use controlled steps. Reaching too far forward can interrupt your rhythm.

  3. 03

    Let your arms help.

Bend your elbows and swing forward and back, keeping your shoulders relaxed.

  4. 04

    Build with patience.

Learn the movement at an easy pace before adding speed or distance.

Warm up with easy walking and slow down again at the end.

06 / GOOD QUESTIONS

A FEW
FAST ANSWERS.

The name, the rules,
and where to go next.

01

Is speed walking the same as race walking?

Yes—on this site, speed walking is my preferred name for race walking. Race walking is the official competitive name; I just like saying speed walking. Competitive race walking has specific technique rules, so walking quickly by itself doesn't necessarily meet them.

02

What are the actual rules?

In competitive race walking, there must be no loss of contact with the ground visible to the human eye. The advancing leg must stay straight from first contact until it reaches the vertical position beneath the body. Officials judge both rules.

03

Do I need special equipment to start?

Comfortable clothes, shoes that fit well, and a suitable place to walk are a good starting point. Bring water as needed. Start at a manageable effort and build gradually.

04

Is the 100K step challenge a beginner workout?

No. It's an extreme personal challenge featured on my channel, not a routine to copy when starting out. Begin with short, comfortable walks and build consistency at your own pace.
